Seraphim 2020 Carmenere Heathcote
As a missive fan of the national grape variety of Chile, I was super excited to find a grower in Heathcote that grows this new & emerging variety.
Carmenere originally was a variety grown in Bordeaux. But with the emerging growth of the Chilean wine industry over the past 50years, Carmenere has became of force on the wine front in Chile, becoming their most important variety.
The variety is a part of the Cabernet Sauvignon family. A Medium to full-bodied red with loads of dark berry fruit notes but has a unique array of savoury characters, from bay leaf across to pickle brine.
Seraphim 2020 Heathcote Carmenere was pick in super small quantities with the quality of fruit outstanding for a first Carmenere vintage.
Fruit was picked in mid April – A simple vinification of the Carmenere allowed me to use to ‘less is more’ approach to see what outcome I had. The outcome was brilliant > Once fermentation had finished I pressed directly in to old neutral barrels where it went through Malolactic fermentation during the winter, sulphured, topped & put to bed.
Seraphim 2020 Carmenere – Medium bodied red with notes of kirsch, blood plums & spice. The back end reveals that typical savoury character, in this case green herbs & a touch of capsicum. Smooth fine tannins finish this wine nicely.
Alc. 13.5%
